Bio:
Endre Nemes (1909–1985) was a Hungarian-born Swedish artist and a significant figure in Surrealism and abstract modernism. He studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts before fleeing to Sweden in 1938, where he became an influential presence in the country's modern art scene. From 1947 to 1955, he served as director of the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg. His work is distinguished by imaginative compositions, symbolic figures, organic forms and expressive use of colour. Nemes worked across painting, printmaking, enamel and monumental public art, gaining particular recognition for his large-scale commissions. He received the Prince Eugen Medal in 1980, and his works are represented in collections including Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum.
