Bio:
Circus imagery occupies a notable place in Danish Modernist art and was already explored in the early 20th century by artists such as Jais Nielsen. Circus animals, performers, movement and vivid visual contrasts offered artists considerable freedom in their treatment of form, rhythm and colour. Øregaard Museum specifically notes the attraction of circus subjects for European avant-garde artists because of their dynamic and spectacular imagery. Within Danish art, this subject matter continued into the figurative Modernism of the 20th century.
