Bio:
Murano is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon that has been the centre of Italian glassmaking since the late 13th century. In 1291 the Venetian Republic ordered glass furnaces to relocate there to protect trade secrets and reduce fire risk in Venice. Over the centuries Murano workshops developed highly refined techniques including controlled air bubbles, coloured glass and complex sculptural forms. During the mid-20th century Murano gained international recognition for modernist art glass, particularly from the 1950s through the 1970s, when bold colours and free-form designs became highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
