Staffordshire figurine, 19th century England. Faience. Polychrome decoration depicting the Scottish king Robert Bruce. The name is on the foot. H.: 38 cm.Robert the Bruce was king of Scotland and defeated King Edward II at Bannockburn in 1314 and made peace in 1328. He was the inspiration for an opera by Rossini performed in 1846. Here the king is seen in full Scottish attire with one hand resting on a sword.
The figure is completely identical to lot 5971, where the figure instead depicts the Scottish rebel leader William Wallace.
