Figure in painted bisque porcelain depicting Ganymede with Jupiter's (Zeus' according to Greek mythology) eagle by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) Designed in Rome 1817-18. This reproduction was produced by Royal Copenhagen in the late 19th century. According to Greek mythology, Zeus' (Jupiter's) eagle abducts Ganymede in order to make him the cupbearer (servant) of the gods. Factory mark on the bottom with the factory's well-known three blue waves. The figure is missing Ganymede's jug in his right hand, and there is a small chip on the eagle's tail. Dimensions: H. 11 cm. The base measures 6 x 12.5 cm.This painted version may have been exhibited, together with other of Thorvaldsen's white Bisquit figures, at the great World Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
