Biography:
Ola Gerhardt was a Swedish artist, illustrator, author, and national folk musician from Jämtland, known for his humorous and culturally rooted depictions of life in the Jämtland region.
Born on March 22, 1920, in Husås in the parish of Lit, Jämtland, as Olof Gerhard Henriksson, he grew up on a medium-sized farm as the youngest of six children. After working in various jobs and completing military preparedness service, he began studying at Birka Folk High School in 1943, where he received violin lessons from Göran Olsson-Föllinger. He had also previously received instruction from David Cederberg in watercolor, pastel drawing, and oil painting.
In 1945, he moved to Östersund and that same year contributed his first works to an art exhibition at the Jämtland County Museum. He then worked at an advertising agency in Östersund and later studied commercial drawing in Hamburg. Subsequently, he opened his own advertising agency, Z-reklam, in Östersund. In 1970, he held his first solo exhibition, followed by another two years later and several more in other cities across northern Sweden. In 1979, he sold his advertising business to focus fully on his artistic career.
