The plate is designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen as part of a set, where the other part is "Night".

The set became some of Thorvaldsen's most popular plates. Each of them symbolizes the two parts of the day, and together they symbolize day and night as a whole. "The night" flies passively across the sky with closed eyes, like the children in her arms. The animal of the night, an owl, is also seen on the plate.
