Bio:
European post-war art of the 1950s was marked by a continued exploration of the visual language of Cubism alongside newer abstract and expressive tendencies. Fragmented figures, shifting viewpoints and geometric construction were used to move beyond conventional naturalistic representation. Mixed media also allowed artists to combine drawing, colour and varied surface effects within a more spontaneous and experimental approach. Cubism itself had already established an important precedent for combining different materials and techniques within a single work.
