Bio:
Vilhelm Petersen (1812–1880) was a Danish painter from the Golden Age period. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and primarily painted landscapes and genre scenes depicting everyday Danish life. His style was naturalistic and influenced by the national romantic movement of the 19th century.
The Danish Golden Age is characterised by poetic and naturalistic depictions of landscape and everyday rural life, often centred on cottages, roads, and clusters of trees. Artists of the period favoured a calm and harmonious visual language with balanced colour and careful attention to light and atmosphere. Oil on wood or mahogany was frequently used for small-format works with refined detail.
